Wood Baseball Bats Versus Aluminum Baseball Bats

Whether you are part of the Little Leaguers, Senior Leaguers, college student's league or professionals, when it comes to baseball, the big questions that pops up is what kind of baseball bat you will use. And, if you really are a baseball player, you definitely know that the discussion is between aluminum bats and wood baseball bats.

One important piece of information you should know is that, in softball, little and senior league and college baseball, most of the bats are made up of aluminum. And yet, when it comes to professional baseball, players say that wood baseball bats are a must. You are now probably wondering what you should choose between these two baseball bat types. And that is why we are here, to discuss the pros and the cons of each type.

Nowadays, baseball bats can be purchased for as low as $25, but you can also buy more expensive $500 bats. A professional player will not choose a bat according to its price, and it all boils down to how he "feels" it. In the professional league, only wood bats are used, and Major League Baseball does not even allow corked bats. Most of the bats are made of ash, but maple, bamboo and hickory are also choices for baseball bats. Lately, more and more players gave up to hickory bats, as they are much heavier than the rest of the woods. Many are now opting for maple bats. Maple baseball bats are increasingly more popular because of its hardness and durability.

Some players also say that they prefer wood baseball bats because of the traditional look and feel. The sound made when the bat hits the ball is vastly different. They say a "crack" sounds way better than the "ping" sound of an aluminum bats hitting the ball.

But aluminum baseball bats are very popular too. They are often seen in all the different baseball leagues, except the professional ones. Why is this? Well, simply because a ball hit with an aluminum bat gets more speed. But this is a positive thing you might say. In fact things are not exactly like that. Due to the fact that they are lighter, a greater distance of the ball can now be achieved with less batter strength. And due to that, several players were injured. Due to the fierceness of the rebound of the aluminum bat, the reaction time of the pitchers is smaller. To prove this, in 1970, when aluminum baseball bats were firstly introduced, the batting average rose 30 points, and home run hits doubled. The game is simply not the same with lighter bats made from aluminum or other materials.

Overall though, buying a baseball bat is a personal decision. You'll definitely want to go with a baseball bat manufacturer that offers lots of customization so you can build the baseball bat most suitable to your size, weight, height and strength. Many also prefer to choose their colors and add a signature but few bat manufacturers allow such customization and personalization due to manufacturing cost factors. So if you are not a professional baseball player, you simply choose the baseball bat that suits you best.

Louisville Baseball Bat Reviews

default Louisville Baseball Bat Reviews

Louisville has a long and respected history in the baseball bat industry and gets a lot of respect in baseball bat reviews. But they've been lagging other manufacturers in developing composite bats. They've upped the ante in 2009 with a spankin' new design that is unique in the industry, and have added a lower cost composite to try and surround Easton in this category. Here's the breakdown of what they offer:

100% Composite:

Triton - Three piece, 100% composite bat with Louisville's stiff handle design. Louisville's has finally responded to Easton's multi-piece bat design with a three piece bat. But they claim this three piece bat is bonded into one piece? Does this make sense to you? Me neither. Louisville has to either admit multi-piece bats are worth it, or stick to a true one piece design. I've hit with the Triton and seen high school kids use it in games. I'm currently undecided on this bat and would recommend the Easton IMX to experienced players who want a high priced 100% composite bat.

TPX Omaha Comp - The Omaha has been a quality bat for a long time. This 100% composite, one piece bat has the standard Louisville stiff handle. I have a strong hunch this is the same bat as the Louisville Catalyst which was discontinued for the 2009 model year. This makes the Omaha Comp very appealing for two reasons. First it is priced correctly for a second tier composite bat and second it has a proven track record being a reborn Catalyst. An excellent choice for those looking for a lower priced composite bat.

Hybrid (composite handle/aluminum barrel):

H2 Hybrid - one piece, a 100% stiff composite handle with a 100% alloy barrel. The handle is actually stiffer than the Exogrid. Currently this bat is priced too high. For another $20 - $30 I can get the new 100% composite bats. That's a no brainer, take the 100% composite bat. On the flip side the H2 and Exogrid (see next category) are priced the same. This also makes no sense as it's a no brainer to take the H2 instead of the Exogrid at the same price.

100% Alloy:

Exogid - One piece, 100% alloy bat with a stiff handle. I've been a big fan of the Exogrid over the last two years, but unless the price drops it's time to move on. I can't recommend spending about the same as the 100% composite bats on this model.

TPX Omaha - One piece, 100% alloy with a stiff handle. It's a great choice for the younger player or those who are more fiscally responsible.

Again, Louisville needs to decide if they're going to jump into the the mult-piece bat market or not. If you're coming out with a three piece bat design, tell me its three pieces and why that makes sense. Don't tell me it's bonded to be a one piece bat. Also, Louisville needs to price their bats correctly. The Triton, H2 and Exogrid are all priced within $30 of each other. This makes absolutely no sense.

2010 Worth Baseball Bat Reviews

default 2010 Worth Baseball Bat Reviews

Last year I said that Rawlings is the Rodney Dangerfield of baseball bats and their brother brand, Worth, is the Joe Piscopo of baseball bats. You know he's still doing comedy shows somewhere on earth but you just don't care. For the 2010 model year nothing has changed. Nobody seems to care about Worth bats and it's difficult to even find much information on their bats. Amazingly this is the case on their own web site where they don't tell you which baseball bats are for the 2010 model year! They only talk about their new softball bats. Worth is owned by K2 (the ski company) which also owns the Rawlings and Miken brands. To the best of my knowledge it appears Worth has abandoned composite bats and is exclusively focusing on alloy bats in 2010. On the surface this makes sense as Miken and Rawlings are focused on composite bats. What's amazing is that Worth's 2010 alloy model is priced in the high end of the alloy bat category!

Even Joe Piscopo is scratching his head about this strategy. Shouldn't Worth be K2's discount brand? I'm including Worth's composite bats in my reviews even though they're the same bats they offered in the 2009 model year. They make no mention of any 2010 composite models on their web site. In addition, all there 2009 composite models have drastically reduced prices indicating they are discontinued. Here is what Worth is offering: Worth Composite Bats

  • Titan - Adult only 100% composite, one-piece bat with a balanced design. Worth does not specify whether this, or any of their bats, has a stiff or flex handle. This is the 2009 model and they do not have a 2010 model. The Adult -3 can be found for anywhere between $159 and $329. Clearly this bat is on the discount racks to clear it from their warehouse. Needless to say you should stay away from this bat.

  • Mayhem Comp - Youth only 100% composite, one piece bat with does not specify the handle flex. This bat is the youth version of the 2009 Titan. Like the Titan it's on the discount racks and appears to be discontinued. Stay away from this bat as well.

Worth Alloy Bats

  • Lithium Prodigy/Amp: This actually is a 2010 model. A 100% alloy, one-piece bat with what appears to be a flex handle and balanced design. The name is different for the Adult/Senior and Youth model but it's the same bat. The Adult -3 model retails for $199 which amazingly prices it with the Louisville Omaha and Easton V12. This bat should be priced around the $149. Unless you're playing T-Ball or want to be ridiculed while at the plate I'd go elsewhere for a bat

default Louisville Slugger TPX Triton Baseball Bat Review

Louisville has finally responded to Easton and Demarini's multi-piece bat designs with the Louisville Slugger TPX Triton, a unique 3 piece bat. What I find amazing about this bat is the size of the barrel. This is the largest barrel I've ever seen on a baseball bat. My initial thought is this thing looks like an oak tree!

The unique 3 piece design allows the barrel and the handle to be designed and built as individual units. They are then fused together via what is called the Bubble Transition Zone. Louisville claims this makes the bat function as a more advanced one piece bat (I'll get to this claim in a second). The bat is made of 100% composite material and includes the standard Louisville stiff handle. The Adult -3 model retails for $399 and the Youth -12 at $249.

Aluminum bats are not guaranteed against denting, bending, breaking, worn finishes, or worn rubber grips.

Louisville Slugger TPX Triton Baseball Bat Review

Louisville has long promoted the benefits of the 1 piece design and stiff handle for baseball bats. The success of 2 piece bats from Easton and Demarini has finally forced them to manufacture a multi piece bat. Unfortunately, being stubborn, they won't admit to the general public that their new multi piece bat is actually a multi piece bat! They claim it's "really" a one piece bat that is fused together from 3 pieces. This is insane!!! Louisville's entire marketing department should be fired immediately.

Louisville has to either admit multi-piece bats have merit or stick to a true one piece design, we're not fools. I'm skeptical to purchase a bat for $399 when the manufacturer is telling me little white lies. What's next, saying they've developed a flex handle fused to act like a stiff handle?

Louisville Slugger TPX Triton Baseball Bat Review

Having said all this about their marketing, or lack there of, I will say that I do think the Louisville TPX Triton is a quality bat. That huge barrel makes it very appealing and it seems to hit very well. But I can not recommend it now due to some doubts about the design and its durability. At the present time I recommend the Easton IMX (Stealth or Synergy IMX) or Demarini CF3 in this category.
